THE WIRE
STEM STICK FLOAT
The
wire stem or Alloy stem stick was initially
designed to handle difficult boils in the
swim, helping it to stabilize in the
turbulent water. Later this became a
favorite float because of the ease of
handling it, a semi cocked float, which
needed less shots down the line.
Anglers found that this float could be used
in almost every condition, and soon the
shape of the float changed. The float took
on a continental look with aerodynamic
shapes similar to some pole floats The wire
stem also changed, and in some cases become
an alloy metal, this combination become a
firm favorite, with anglers scoring some big
catches. An angler
who developed this float more than most was
John Allerton, from the North of England; he
used this float to great affect on the Trent
and other waters winning major competitions.
This float become surmountable with his
name.
With the float now taking on a shoulder, the
float can be held back with ease, the
surface skim would pass over the shoulder,
helping to keep the float low and
controllable, slowing up the presentation.
This float would present the bait almost
perfect, especially when the surface skim
was faster them the current below.
With the heavier alloy metal base, casting
is also easier, making this float a good all
rounder.
The thinner wire stem stick has still got
its uses, smaller shallower rivers, and with
the wire giving a stable presentations this
float should always serve a purpose.
I find with a smaller wire stem there is
less movement of the float in turbulent
swims with a thicker stem the float tends to
lean. When
fishing turbulent swims, its best to string
the shots more down the line at the business
end, or bulking down is just as good, with
less chance of the bait swirling around. A
few shots close to the hook are also a good
idea.
With a shoulder float, it tends to dunk in
the water when striking hard, so not to
spook the fish a gentle pulling strike is
preferred, unless you want to make the
angler down stream, jump as Well.
