THE SMALL
SHOULDER PEAR
This smaller version of the reverse shoulder
float, does the same work as its larger
cousin, except this one can be used with finer
presentation, on smaller river's and in some
cases moving canals and the like.
This float comes with more of a squatter
shape, allowing perfect control at all times
and the shape allows it to be held back in a
static position.
In some cases a wire bristle can take the
place of a nylon or cane tip, this will give a
very sensitive indicator, greasing the wire
bristle allows it to be held up by the skin of
the water.
Fished on medium paced water's with a depth of
5ft to 9ft this float is the perfect tool,
accounting for some good bags of roach,
winning and getting placed in open matches on
the Warwickshire Avon, is testimonial to its
affect.
Pole main line diameter 11 and a
hook length of diameter 6, float 1/2 gram
either bulk down or strung out, just over
depth and balance shotting. Hook size 24,
single maggot lying just on the bottom.
Using a strung out shotting pattern can be
very prolific for roach, with this method the
float can be eased down the swim very gentle,
as if putting the bait into the fish’s mouth.
When held back the bait will rise slightly and
then released. The fish normally respond to
this with a positive pull of the float.
A little tip with the pole, is not to let it
pass over the feeding areas keep the float and
baiting area down from you at a 45% angle, and
when hooking the fish bring it up gently out
of the feeding shoal.
Landing the fish with an extra section
off allows you to net the fish with ease; I
like to use number 3 or 4 elastic for this
type of roach fishing.
A tip I learnt from the French anglers, is to
thread the elastic through only the top
section tip of the pole, it gives you a much
better control of the elasticity without it
being pulled out to far by medium size fish.
Greasing the elastic helps stop jarring when
the elastic is pulled out allowing a smooth
retrieve of the fish.
