OVAL BODY
POLE FLOAT
This type of float is very versatile,
due to its shape, it is sandwiched between
a Stillwater and a running water float,
and can be used on a variety of waters.
The
English team used this float to good
effect in the World championship in
Finland at Laperantere. The venue was a
deep water flowing canal type of venue,
similar to the Gloucester canal, holding
back the float when there is a flow on and
just letting it go when it eased up.
The
nature of this float is that you can do
both hold back or let it drift. Smaller
version can be seen on small canals, used
by anglers in the know.
Shotted
with a bulk down and dropper shots. Sizes
range from 4x16 up to 3 grams.
I used
this float to good effect in France on the
River Rhine near Strasbourg, France in the
1986 World championships, winning the
first day event with 17lb of
bream.
Using a
split olivine method, I could change the
bulk down and split the weight to allow
the float to catch the flow. Sometimes
this presentation of moving the bait works
very well, especially if you use bloodworm
on moving water.
The
bloodworm swims and comes off the bottom;
the lighter weight down produces a good
presentation allowing the bait to go with
the flow, as the fish follow the worm. When the
flow pushes harder and you want the bait
to stay near the bottom, simply pull the
Olivetti’s together and the weight is then
transferred back to the bottom ready for
holding back
A lot of these pole floats have a very
shiny surface to them. I like to rub the
body over with a black matt marker pen;
this stops the float from being too
reflective and helps with camouflage.
