LONG OVAL
POLE FLOAT
The long oval type of shape pole floats are
generally recognized as whip or pole to hand
floats, although they can work equally as well
on a breaking down pole.
The nature of the shape of this float, lends
it to be very sensitive, it can have wire,
cane, and nylon bristles, with wire, cane,
carbon base stems.
Weighting these floats are done by spaced
shotting or styles or bunched in intervals
down the line for quicker sinking
presentation.
Smaller oval pole floats work well on small
canals and other smaller venues; the shape of
the float allows it to trot with a flow,
holding back it tends to ride up in the water.
Fishing a winter league on the Kennet and Avon
Canal one year saw me catching reasonably well
on this float, with a breaking down pole
method yet I knew I had to speed up my catch
rate of those small blade skimmers, by adding
extra line to my pole so it became a float to
hand method helped me to amass over 300
skimmers giving me a weight of over l 71b.
It is the only float that I know that can work
equally well as a pole to hand float and a
breaking down pole method.
This float comes in a variety of oval shapers,
and sizes, the larger cousins are used
frequently on big fish bagging sessions, I
have used them often in Ireland and Denmark
and have had match weights of 1421b and 1361b
respectively on the river Blackwater, Ireland.
When winning the Boyle festival Southern
Ireland 1989 I used a large oval type pole to
hand method. It is the only shape float that
ranges from a 4x18 up to a 10grams that can be
used on such a wide variety of water.
As a rule of thumb, a wire bristle
float is used for smaller rigs, such as small
canals and Stillwater, nylon, or cane tips,
for larger and heavier fishing.
Smaller floats are best used with reducing
size style leads, and larger floats with
reducing size split shots.
