FRENCH POLE
FLOAT ( PEAR SHAPE)
This
pear shape float is a drop pear and this one
illustrated was developed by the float company
WaterQueen First shown to me when fishing on
the river Seine, Chalon Ser Mar, France.
Yet this float is fished with a difference,
shotted with a bulk and a string of shots
below, but this float is under shotted, in
other words. Shotted very buoyant showing a
large part of the float.
The tip of the pole is then sunk below the
surface and then held back against the flow,
this allows the boat to settle as normal,
except the pole pulls the float down to the
cane tip part of the float, the pace and the
flow of the float down stream is then dictated
by the angler.
The advantage of this method is, when the
angler gets a bite it will be a positive one,
and not a false bite as the over shotted basic
river pear shape as described in a previous
article.
This method helped France to win the World
Championships in Yugoslavia on the river Drava
1990. Beating England and Italy respectively.
Although the float is very similar to the drop
pear shape this smaller squatter shape makes
the method work a lot better. I have used this
method with good results; it can only be used
in deep water, where the pole over the top of
the fish and under the water cannot spook
them.
Venues like the Gloucester canal or parts of
the Severn and Avon, and Bristol Avon can all
benefit with this method, venues abroad lend
this method well, Holland on the deep canals,
Ireland and the big rivers and lochs etc...
Plumbing must be spot on with this method, the
length of line on the bottom must not exceed
more than a few inches or centimeters, if it
does then the float will be pulled under more
than it should be.
When plumbing fast flowing deep water, you
must allow for the pressure of the current, as
the flow can give a false depth try plumbing
with a heavy weight and do it several times,
up and down the swim, creating a mental
picture of the bottom.
